EPOS P 24/5 Position Controller

Description

Maxon’s new EPOS P 24/5 is a programmable digital motion controller capable of position, velocity, and current mode. After initial programming, the EPOS P 24/5 may be operated as a stand-alone position controller, or used to control other non-programmable EPOS units, resulting in a cost-effective multi-axis control system. The small package size and cost-efficient design makes the EPOS P 24/5 an ideal choice for controlling small brush or brushless motors. Dimensions are 105 X 83 X 24 mm (4.2 X 3.3 X .9 in) and weight is approximately 180 g (6.4 oz). Communication is via RS-232 or CANopen. Programming is accomplished via the IEC 61131-3 standard with various editors (ST, IL, FBD, LD, SFC). All software is complimentary and available via internet. Requiring a supply voltage of 11-24 V DC, the controller is capable of 5 A max continuous current and 10 A peak current. Efficiency is up to 90%. The 50 kHz switching frequency and built-in choke insures compatibility with most low inductance motors, while the sinusoidal commutation for brushless motors insures minimal torque ripple and low noise. Maximum motor speed is 25,000 rpm for 2-pole motors. A maximum encoder input frequency of 1 MHz, six digital inputs, four digital outputs, and two analog inputs allows for maximum flexibility. Due to its programming versatility, the EPOS P 24/5 is suitable for a variety of applications including controlling multi-axis systems, test & measurement equipment, pick and place machines, motorized stages, optics, medical imaging, robotics and manufacturing. Maxon designs, manufactures, and markets fractional horsepower moving coil DC motors & brushless motors ranging in size from 6 to 90 mm (0.2 to 3.5 in) and from 0.03 to 500 watts.
