Protective Vent With Metal Housing for Harsh Environments

Description

Elkton, Maryland, June, 15, 2006—W. L. Gore & Associates, Inc., has released a new protective vent with metal housing that performs successfully even in extreme conditions such as widely fluctuating temperatures, extreme moisture, and large amounts of environmental contaminants. Like other GORE™ Protective Vents, this new product provides superior protection and pressure equalization for electrical enclosures, outdoor electronics, domestic appliances, and a wide range of other products containing electronic components.

GORE™ Protective Vents allow air to pass freely through housings, so they virtually eliminate the stress caused by sudden changes in temperature and pressure that can compromise gaskets or housing seals. These vents also provide the advantage of easy access to sensitive electronics for maintenance, without allowing contaminants such as water, chemicals, oil, or dust to enter the housing.

The consistent performance of GORE™ Protective Vents is due to the hydrophobic and oleophobic characteristics of the membrane itself — expanded polytetraflouroethylene (ePTFE). Cindy Marra, Gore application engineer at the Elkton, Maryland, headquarters, says, “The microporous ePTFE membrane allows gasses and vapors to pass freely in and out of the enclosure, equalizing the pressure differential between the enclosure and the ambient temperature. At the same time, the microporous membrane prevents water and dust from penetrating the enclosure, which significantly enhances the life of sensitive electronics inside the enclosure.”

The new GORE™ Protective Vent has a tough metal housing that ensures extra durability and reliability in extremely harsh and explosive environments such as the oil and gas industry and telecommunications facilities. With over 50 million installations worldwide, GORE™ Vents typically are used in pressure or gas sensors, in electrochemical sensors that may be exposed to harsh chemicals, or in battery-operated devices that can develop internal explosive atmospheres due to hydrogen buildup. GORE™ Protective Vents are also ideal for use in outdoor lighting, because ePTFE membrane is moisture-vapor permeable, which prevents condensation and fogging from occurring.

Available in a wide variety of sizes and configurations, GORE™ Protective Vents are versatile and cost effective, because they integrate easily into existing electronic enclosures and manufacturing methods as well as new product designs.
