If you really value the teenage on your list's future, you'll get a random box of electronics delivered their doorstep every month.  Not just a package full of wires and junk, but a Thimble box, which comes with specific components such as PCBs and servos for a new STEM project, from a small mobile robot to a light switch. They'll need a soldering iron and other materials (sold separately), but experience is not needed.
